Languages Spoken in China

Many travellers to China have questions like: What is the most commonly spoken language in China? or Which languages am I likely to encounter in China? Now as a Chinese, I will give the right answers.

Standard Mandarin, the official language of China, is spoken and understood throughout most of China, including increasing numbers of people in Hong Kong, and Standard Cantonese is spoken and understood in Hong Kong, some parts of Guangdong province, Macau, and by many overseas Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, the U.S., Australia and Europe.

So if you want to learn Chinese, you should learn the official language, Standard Mandarin. If you speak Mandarin, 99% of the people in mainland of China can understand you.

There are some other languages spoken in China, such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Xiang, Min and Hakka. I think you don’t need to learn much about these languages, because I can’t speak these languages too, and so do many Chinese people.
